Special Items in TFT
Beyond standard completed items, Teamfight Tactics features several categories of special items that offer unique effects and elevated power levels. These items can shift the trajectory of a game and are often the difference between a top-four finish and a first-place victory. Understanding how to obtain and use them is a key part of advanced TFT strategy.
Spatula and Emblems
The Spatula is the most unique item component in TFT. Unlike the other eight components, which provide straightforward stats, the Spatula's primary purpose is to create emblem items.
How Emblems Work
Combining a Spatula with any other item component produces an emblem that grants a specific trait to the champion holding it. The trait granted depends on which component is paired with the Spatula, and the available emblems change each set to match the current roster of traits.
Emblems are powerful because they allow you to:
- Reach higher trait breakpoints without adding extra champions of that trait to your board.
- Grant a trait to a champion who does not naturally have it, opening up synergies that would otherwise be impossible.
- Free up board space by achieving trait thresholds with fewer champions, letting you slot in additional supporting units or a secondary carry.
Tactician's Crown
Combining two Spatulas creates a Tactician's Crown, one of the most impactful special items in the game. Instead of equipping to a champion, the Tactician's Crown sits on your bench and grants one additional team slot, allowing you to field an extra champion beyond the normal maximum. This extra unit provides a significant advantage in both trait activation and raw board strength.
Artifact Items
Artifact items are a category of powerful completed items with unique, often game-altering effects that go beyond what standard items offer. They typically have stronger stats, more dramatic passives, or completely unique mechanics that standard recipes cannot replicate.
Key Characteristics
- Stronger than normal items. Artifacts generally provide more value than a standard completed item occupying the same slot.
- Unique effects. Many artifacts have one-of-a-kind mechanics that enable specific strategies or dramatically change how a champion functions.
- Limited availability. Artifacts cannot be freely crafted from components. They are obtained through specific augments, special orbs, or other set-specific mechanics.
Because of their power and rarity, artifact items can be build-defining. When offered an artifact, evaluate whether it fits your current composition or whether it is strong enough to pivot around.
Radiant Items
Radiant items are enhanced versions of normal completed items. They retain the same core identity as their base item but feature boosted stats and amplified effects.
How Radiant Items Differ
- Higher stat values. A radiant item provides significantly more of the stats its base version grants.
- Enhanced passives. The passive effect is often stronger, triggers more frequently, or scales better.
- Visual distinction. Radiant items have a glowing visual indicator so you can quickly identify them on the board.
Obtaining Radiant Items
Radiant items are typically offered through set-specific mechanics. Common sources include:
- Augment choices that grant a radiant version of an item.
- Special item orbs that drop during PvE rounds.
- Carousel rounds in certain game modes.
A single radiant item on your carry can be worth more than two standard items in terms of raw effectiveness, making them a high priority whenever they are available.
Obtaining Special Items
Special items come from a variety of sources, and the exact mechanics shift between sets. However, the most common avenues include:
- Augments: Many augments directly grant special items or provide a choice among them. Augments are the most reliable source of emblems, artifacts, and radiant items.
- Special orbs: Some PvE rounds or stage transitions drop orbs that contain special items rather than standard components.
- Carousel rounds: Occasionally, carousel rounds feature special items instead of or alongside standard completed items.
- Set-specific mechanics: Each set introduces unique ways to acquire special items, such as shops, encounters, or mini-games.
Strategic Considerations
- Special items are generally stronger than standard items. When you have access to one, it should usually take priority over a normal completed item in the same slot.
- Emblems enable compositions. If you are offered an emblem for a key trait, it can allow you to run a composition that would otherwise require too many champions to activate.
- Plan around what you are offered. Since special items are not reliably craftable, treat them as opportunities rather than expectations. Build your game plan around the standard recipe system and adapt when special items appear.
- Do not force pivots for weak special items. Not every artifact or radiant item justifies changing your composition. Evaluate whether the item genuinely improves your board before committing to it.
